Description
Just hatched nymphs of the Cotton Harlequin Bug on the leaf of a Wild Hibiscus tree. The mother is still standing guard over the empty eggs near the base of the leaf stem.

In Shield Bugs the front wings fuse together to from a hard shield over their body. Because of this they are sometimes mistaken for beetles but the suctorial mouthparts differentiate them from beetles. Beetles also have paired elytra, modified front wings hardened to form a rigid protective cover for the body.
